KOYA is a coalition-building movement designed to place a village of protectors around every young man we serve, and to expand that village statewide, nationally, and globally. The Case · Why KOYA · Why Now
The crisis is not a series of isolated tragedies. It is a systemic pattern.
AELF has compiled a strategic matrix of 43 landmark cases spanning 2006–2026 documenting an escalating pattern of high-profile incidents, suspicious fatalities, and unresolved cases involving young Black men, including students, athletes, first-year college students, and sons freshly returned home.
- Unexplained hangings and body recoveries in trees, waterways, and roadsides
- Suspicious "suicide" rulings closed without independent forensic review
- Fatal encounters with peers, adults, and law enforcement
- Missing persons cases open years after disappearance
- On-campus and community assaults resulting in death or long-term harm
- A sharp 18-month shift toward unexplained public hangings
Our young men need more than sympathy. They need protective infrastructure, including trained mentors, safety curriculum, trusted law-enforcement relationships, academic scaffolding, and a coalition of adults committed to intervening before tragedy strikes.
A Connected Continuum of Care
Protecting our youth requires an organized, connected effort at every level of human endeavor.
No single organization, agency, or institution can carry this charge alone. The KOYA Coalition is built as a continuum of care within the village, aligning families, schools, faith communities, fraternal and civic organizations, law enforcement, government, corporate partners, and global allies into one coordinated system of protection, mentorship, and opportunity.
When these levels are connected locally, statewide, nationally, and globally, the village gains the power to protect. That is the organizational charge of the KOYA Coalition.
How the Coalition Works
Protection happens when every part of a young man's village is aligned.
Mentorship Circles
Trained mentors meet regularly with youth to provide guidance, accountability, and a consistent adult presence.
Family Engagement
Workshops and communication training help families and caregivers reinforce safety and leadership at home.
Safety Partnerships
Law enforcement and public safety partners teach de-escalation, situational awareness, and safe interactions.
